Scammed by DEL PASO Car Rent Malaga

On one of our journeys back to Malaga Spain, we rented for a third time with Del Paso Car Hire Malaga. Unfortunately they have changed for the worse.

Before we start, let it be clear that we aim to inspire with our online presence. We are hugely disappointed having to post an article like this today. But it’s even more important that others don’t have this same experience, and that’s why we choose to post this here. Feel free to skip ahead to one of our much more inspiring stories!

Our car rental booking was extremely cheap, via doyoutialy.com. In Sicily we have used this website tens of times and never been disappointed. In Malaga twice before with Del Paso everything was also as promised. We would be able to rent a car for a very low price, with very minimal insurance, but a high excess blocked on our credit card. Unfortunately, with Del Paso, you can’t do this anymore.

On arrival at the Del Paso car rental desk, they now apply a range of tricks to make you sign for their all-risk service, in our case for 140 euro’s extra for the total rental period of 6 days.

Our rental booking on DoYouItaly was quoted at 14 Euro’s when going through the listings. As we are quite familiar with how DoYouItaly works, we did read through ALL terms and conditions, and knew this was a rental deal without fuel included. An admin fee of 40 euro’s and the amount of fuel remaining in the car at the end of the rental, would be an extra cost. (There is no mention of kilometers driven or any relation to miles per liter of fuel)
First of all, we highly discourage DoYouItaly from listing these car rental deals. Simply because the price quoted in LARGE font, is NOT AT All THE PRICE YOU WILL PAY for the rental in the end. This can simply be seen as fraudulent activity.

In any case, we were aware of it so we expected about a 40 euro extra to be paid overall. We would plan to return the car back full anyway, and then pay this 40 euro ‘refuelling operational and admin fee’.

But at the desk, when asked about this procedure and our intentions as above, a gentleman working for Del Paso that was dealing with another customer, stood up and starting talking to us in a disrespectful manner, that we were not allowed to do that. His words were these: “The price of the fuel relative to the distance driven, and the operational AND admin fueling cost would be charged to us and not refunded, even if we would refuel the car back to full and bring it back full.” This to us, is not in line with the terms and conditions of the rental contract. It is also highly disappointing AND misleading conduct on the part of the Del Paso staff.

See the picture below for the exact options they showed us at the desk. The female employee who was kind but misleading, told us multiple times that it was cheaper to go with Option 1 (paying a non-refundable extra) than going with Option 2 (what we had actually booked). Seeing that Option 2 is for the most part refundable, this is of course wrong information and misleading.

Unfortunately, after a short discussion, and because the male staff told us they would not refund the fuel cost even if we would bring the car back with a full tank, we gave in to the staff and paid the fee of 140 euro’s, even though WE DID NOT WANT a fully insured rental. Had we wanted that, that’s what we would have booked instead of course.

Obviously we won’t be seen at Del Paso again, and we HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TO RENT FROM DEL PASO MALAGA AIRPORT due to these fraudulent practices.

See below the car rental prices as quoted by DoYouItaly, as an example. I do not have a screenshot of my actual booking anymore, but I can confirm the details apart from the price were identical. Simply put, At Del Paso Malaga it is not possible to rent a car paying only this amount. The further mandatory costs are only revealed when clicking on ‘Rental Conditions’.

See below the Rental Conditions, part ‘Fuel Policy’. An additional 2 clicks are required to reveal the information about these mandatory fees.

See below the options shown at the desk of Del Paso Malaga, which do not clearly state what part of fees is refundable and what is not. In fact the employee literally told me it is cheaper to go for Option 1 instead of Option 2 (option 2 being what I actually booked). Option 1 is non-refundable as you are paying for extra insurance which you did not want. Option 2 consists of a damage deposit, a tank of fuel based on an unknown liter price of fuel, and a fuel operational surcharge. The price of a full tank of fuel as per the terms and conditions picture above is between 140 and 150 euro’s. The Citroen DS3 Fuel tank capacity as given by Google is 50 liters. This makes the liter price of fuel as per this contract 3,00 Euro’s per litre. The actual fuel prices in Spain that day (July 2025) were ranging from 1,50 to 1,60 EURO per litre. The fuel price of fuel not used, and the damage deposit, should be refundable, but this is not made clear in the info shown. And more importantly, the employee gave me misleading information.
